A MESSAGE REGARDING AIR POLLUTION
A MESSAGE REGARDING AIR POLLUTION:
The American Lung Association reports that over 900,000 people in the Delaware Valley suffer from chronic respiratory disease.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency establishes and monitors health standards for six common air pollutants. The Delaware Valley does not meet health standards for 2 of these pollutants: Ground-Level Ozone and Particle Pollution.
Air pollution affects everyone. The average adult breathes over 3,000 gallons of air every day. Children breathe up to 50% more air per pound of body weight than adults making them more susceptible to harmful effects of air pollution.
What you can do to safeguard your health:
• Take the bus, train, or carpool whenever possible
• Do all errands in one trip
• Reduce emissions from idling when you stop your car for a minute or more
• Keep your car tuned up and running efficiently
• Refuel at the end of the day – Ozone levels are at their highest in the mid to late afternoon
• Don’t top off your tank – Spillage adds almost 2 tons of pollution each day to our air
• Mow the lawn late in the afternoon or use an electric or push mower
• Conserve energy in your home – this action reduces air pollution from power plants and also save you money
