MANSFIELD TOWNSHIP ACHIEVES DEBT-FREE STATUS WITHOUT INCREASING LOCAL PROPERTY TAXES

PORT MURRAY, NJ: The Township of Mansfield, Warren County, New Jersey today announces that effective September 1, 2026 the municipal government has achieved debt free status by fully eliminating all short-term and long-term debt marking a significant milestone in the Township’s financial history.

Through prudent budgeting, deliberate financial planning and responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars, Mansfield Township has successfully retired all municipal financial obligations, some of which originated well over a decade ago, utilized to fund past capital projects.  This accomplishment significantly strengthens the Township’s financial position and provides a solid foundation for continued investment in essential services and community infrastructure for the benefit of the broader Mansfield community.

“Becoming debt free has been an important goal and is an extraordinary achievement for the Township. It is a testament to the discipline and dedication of our elected officials, both past and present, our municipal employees and of course our residents”, said Mayor Joseph Watters.

“We are particularly proud that our debt elimination achievement was accomplished without relying on increasing the municipal component of local property taxes which is something not commonly seen in other municipalities across the state and country”

The financial strength now enjoyed by Mansfield provides greater flexibility in planning for future capital needs and reduces the financial burden on taxpayers associated with debt service and interest costs.  It reflects the Township’s long-term commitment to maintaining strong and sustainable fiscal discipline for residents.

The Township of Mansfield extends its upmost appreciation to current and former elected officials, municipal employees, financial professionals, and most importantly to the residents of the Township of Mansfield whose continued support and commitment to the community have helped make this achievement possible.

Maintaining a healthy financial position allows the Township greater flexibility when responding to emerging needs, addressing key infrastructure priorities and when evaluating future projects.  Township officials emphasized that the achievement is not simply a financial milestone that is rarely obtainable by most municipalities, but it is an investment in Mansfield’s future.
